Just Beat It!
Over and over I’ve read advice about finding a workout you enjoy and you’ll stick with it. And I’ve secretly thought, “Yeah, right. I workout because it keeps me sane and in shape. That motivates me, but I will never enjoy it!” I’ve been a runner, but I’ve never gotten the runner’s high. I’ve tried Zumba. Kinda fun, but I fall all over myself. I do like hiking, but it’s not feasible for me to do that more than once a week. And yoga is awesome, but that’s more for my soul.
BUT, I finally get it! Since leaving my ex, I’ve found a class at the Brentwood YMCA called Pound. It’s an hour of full out pounding on the floor with drumsticks. It’s choreographed to fantastic music, and the instructor is amazing. I smile the entire time, even when I’m huffing and wiping sweat off my face. Today we sat on the floor for an ab track. Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” came on. How appropriate.
I’ve gone to class when I was fuming and beat the hell out of the floor. I’ve gone in feeling happy and let the drumming take me higher. I’ve gone in feeling sad and lonely and allowed myself to get lost for an hour. For me, it’s the true definition of catharsis. It has been another path for processing the grief of my divorce.
If you are local and want to go with me, I go Wednesdays from 9:30-10:30. I would love to introduce you to Pound! If you want to see a sample workout, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFWGbFy-Bss.
No matter what, find something you love, something just for you. Maybe it’s a workout, but maybe it’s something that gives you space to breathe. Or maybe it’s something that makes you laugh. Remember my last post...this could be heaven. Live it. Love it. And, maybe Pound It!
