Frequently Asked Questions
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by a gentle laying on of hands and is based on the idea that unseen life force energy flows through us. If your life force energy is low, then you are more likely to get sick or feel stress. If it is high, you are more likely to be healthy and happy.
Reiki came to the U.S. from Japan and the word Reiki is made of two Japanese words:
Rei: God's Wisdom or the Higher Power
Ki: Life Force Energy
The treatment feels like a warm, unconditional love that flows through and around you. Reiki treats you as a whole person - including your body, emotions, mind and spirit. It has many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of inner peace, security and well-being. Many have reported miraculous results.
Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
Reiki is spiritual in nature in that it provides love and compassion to the client. It is not a religion nor does it require belief for it to work. Reiki has no dogma and does not conflict with religious beliefs. People who are followers of all of the various religions have practiced Reiki and have found that it enhances their religious experience.
How do you pronounce Reiki?
How does a Practitioner learn Reiki?
An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki Master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.
Reiki’s use is not dependent on intellectual capacity or spiritual development so it is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds, all over the world.
I have completed Level 1 and Level 2 Reiki training.
How long does a Reiki session last?
My sessions last about an hour. We talk for about 10 minutes to check in and identify how you’re feeling and any current concerns. The hands-on treatment lasts about 45 minutes and then we close with comments and impressions from the session.
How does a session work?
I will ask you to remove your shoes but you will not need to undress. I welcome you to wear loose, comfortable clothing. I will also ask you to remove any watches or other electronic devices.
As long as you don’t have any discomfort, you will lie on a massage table. I will have a sheet and blanket available if you would like to be covered. If needed, Reiki can also be performed while you’re seated.
When we begin the treatment, I will ask you to close your eyes and will provide a cloth or eye pillow to drown out the light.
I will play soft music and begin to use my hands. I will use a light touch in a series of hand positions. These may include the head and shoulders, the heart, the stomach, and feet. I may also have you lay on your stomach and treat your back. I am happy to focus healing in other areas as well at your request.
Many clients go into a deep meditative state while receiving Reiki. Others fall asleep. It is perfectly normal to smile, to cry or to just breathe.
When the treatment is complete, I’ll ask you to slowly sit up. I will share my observations and ask for your feedback.

Is there any research proving that Reiki works?
Results from scientific research have been inconsistent. Typically this lack of scientific validation would send me running for the hills. I am a science major and typically a black and white thinker. I’ve been described as a skeptic. However, I’ve seen healing firsthand over and over. I cannot explain it. I cannot prove it. It may be the placebo effect, but if someone’s debilitating back pain goes away, I don’t much care if healing occurred from the treatment or the placebo effect. I care that the pain went away.
